The
battle over same-sex “marriage” is now raging
in Massachusetts in the aftermath of their state Supreme
Court’s ruling that “ignored their own constitution”
and instead followed the provincial courts of Canada by
ordering up same-sex “marriage”. The court’s
November 4-3 ruling stated it would be unconstitutional
to deny sex couples the full benefits of marriage, and gave
the state legislature 180 days to “act as it deems
appropriate” .
In
a December poll of likely Massachusetts voters, 69% said
they wanted to vote on a constitutional amendment to keep
Massachusetts a traditional marriage state . Unfortunately,
there was no tea party in Boston last week when the Massachusetts
legislature met to try and pass an amendment that defines
marriage as the union of one man and one woman. For two
days, widely divided state legislators, short of a 2/3rds
vote, floated and debated varying amendment proposals as
they dealt with the May 17th deadline imposed by the court
to force same-sex “marriage” on the state – and in turn the nation. They are scheduled to reconvene
on March 11th.
Meanwhile,
in response to the Massachusetts court decision, the mayor
of San Francisco violated his own state’s law when
he extended a Valentines Day invitation for same-sex couples
to wed. He granted, what officials insist are, legally binding
marriage licenses to more than 1000 same-sex couples who
flocked there from across the country. This elected official
has ignored the will of the people of California who passed
a ballot initiative in 2000 which said the state would recognize
marriages between one man and one woman only. Randy Thomasson,
director of the Campaign for California Families said at
a news conference “No one has made the mayor of San
Francisco king;… He cannot trash the vote of the people” .
The
question is, how will we stop this madness, insist that
our laws be upheld, and stop the judiciary from legislating
from the bench on this issue? Congress must pass a federal
constitutional amendment which cannot be overturned in the
courts. Until that happens, many more states (including
New Jersey), must pass their own state constitutional amendment,
as marriage law is still being challenged at the state level.
The states who were successful in stopping same-sex marriage
(Hawaii, Alaska, Nebraska, and Nevada), did so by a constitutional
amendment approved by a vote of the people. The campaign
for same-sex marriage is a transparent attempt to redefine
a crucial social institution without the consent of the
governed. As a flyer, handed out by Your Catholic Voice
in a rally on the Boston Common, stated “It is supposed
to be…government of the people, by the people, and
for the people, not government by four people”. But
ultimately, same-sex marriage was defeated in the above
states because the public rose up. They were informed and
mobilized at the grassroots level: through mailings, door-to-door
campaigns and the concerted efforts of churches and pro-family
groups within those states. The good news is people are
rising up in Massachusetts. Leaders and members of over
3,000 churches, mosques, and synagogues, have issued a joint
statement in support of a constitutional amendment. Rep.
Marie Parente-D, said she had to turn off her e-mail for
three days to catch up with it all, and stated that “This
decision will affect so many lives and people know it” .
Do
we here in NJ know how critical our participation is to
preserve marriage? Homosexuals may only account for about
2- 3% of the population, but they are focused, well funded,
and committed to changing marriage law and society as we
know it. If the far left activists get the victories they
seek and the political power they lust for, you can absolutely
count on several things :
1.
Every public schoolchild in America – which is millions
of children – will be taught a radically perverse
and anti-Christian view of sex, marriage, and morality from
now on.
2. Free speech will be curtailed as laws are enacted and
enforced to prevent anyone from uttering negative words
about homosexual behavior.
3. Religious freedom will diminish as Christians are prevented
from publicly stating or teaching what the Bible says about
sexual immorality.
4. Traditional legal definitions of “mother”
and “father” will fade away because marriage
could consist of two “mothers” or two “fathers”
– or more. Anything will be possible if marriage is
opened to same-sex couples or groups.
They will succeed in our state if we do nothing. Make no
mistake – the attack on marriage in our country is
now severe and unrelenting, and we must rise up to stop
it. To get all the information you need to make your voice
heard, call the New Jersey Family Policy Council today at

they “stand in the gap” for NJ families.
