Since
the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the Boy Scouts have the
right to determine the requirements for being scout leaders,
homosexual activists have mounted an all out assault on
scout troops in the state and on the local level in an attempt
to force them to change their position. The latest of these
attacks is an effort by the NJ Department of Education to
get the state school board to include “sexual orientation”
in its anti-discrimination policy. In effect, this would
forbid school districts from renting space to the Boy Scouts
and even some religious groups, because they teach that
homosexuality is morally unacceptable. Not only would this
violate the equal access law, but even the NJ Chapter of
the ACLU has said that the state can not prohibit local
school districts from renting their public facilities to
any particular group, even groups with discriminatory policies
because “It’s a principle of free speech”
. Therefore, homosexual activists should not be allowed
to continue to attack a private organization whose mission
statement includes being “morally straight” by dragging them through more legal battles even after their
position has been vindicated by the highest court in our
land.
In
further defense of the Boy Scouts, there is a great need
to clarify two very critical misconceptions that people
have with regard to homosexuality, and in turn with the
Boy Scout’s policy stance. The first misconception
involves equating homosexuality with an immutable or unchangable
characteristic. For example, the change being considered
by the state school board about renting public space would
equate “sexual orientation” to a list of unchangeable
characteristics such as race, sex and color. The fact is
that it has never been proven by scientific research that
homosexuality is either inborn or unchangeable . So, on
what basis do we give up our right as a society to hold
a moral stance against the practice of homosexuality? And
on what basis do we instead accept, embrace, or be “tolerant” of homosexuality as something our children should be taught
to view as an innocuous alternative lifestyle? Parents have
the right to expect that when they send their young boys
to participate in a scouting program that teaches them how
to be men, that the leaders can be trusted to reflect and
reinforce the healthiest sexual and moral values as well.
Secondly,
there is valid scientific justification for the Boy Scout’s
policy of excluding homosexuals from being scout leaders,
and for parents and community leaders to have legitimate
concern about their boys spending time alone with openly
homosexual scout leaders. Various research statistics show
that a significantly greater percentage of homosexual men
sexually abuse young boys compared to the percentage of
heterosexuals who sexually abuse young girls . This and
other disturbing statistics are documented in the latest
publication of Dr. Judith Reisman, a world-renowned researcher
of homosexuality, expert witness before the attorney general’s
commission on pornography, and author of “Kinsey,
Crimes & Consequences. Based on U.S. Dept. of Commerce
statistics for 1991 (a comparable base year), 17 to 24%
(est.) of all boys under 18 were victimized by homosexuals
and about 25% (est.) of all girls under 18 were victimized
by heterosexuals. Since the heterosexual male population
outnumbers the homosexual male population by about 44 to1,
these child sexual abuse data reveal that homosexual males
commit a sexual abuse on a child about 40 times more OFTEN
than heterosexual males. Although all homosexual males do
not sexually assault boys, there is a vast pederast boy
abuse subculture within the homosexual male population that
commits multiple, repeated child sex offenses. In fact,
the latest July 2000 U.S. Department of Justice statistic
shows that 64% of forcible sodomy victims are boys under
12 years of age.
We
must speak up in support of the Boy Scouts to our community
leaders and not allow them to be unfairly and unethically
pressured to go against their standards. For 91 years, the
Boy Scouts have been a safe haven for young boys, keeping
them off the streets and out of mischief, and have taken
a clear moral stance that provides important protection
and guidance for our young people. To allow them to be denied
the support they need or public privileges they are entitled
to, because of that stance, would be a total disservice
to, and a potentially dangerous decision for, society and
our local communities. 730 Words.
