Vote Your Values!
Posted September 19, 2008
Last week, more than 2,000 grassroots patriots gathered in Washington, D.C. for FRC Action’s (the legislative action arm of the Family Research Council) annual Value Voters Summit. In a room charged with the excitement – and significance – of the upcoming national elections, pro-family leaders from Congress, think-tanks, and the media informed, inspired, and equipped attendees to return home and make a real impact in their communities, counties, state, and nation.
The message was clear: when faced with the choice this Election Day – or any election day – we must vote our values. And these values touch every aspect of public policy.
Here in New Jersey, issues such as parental notification laws, same-sex “marriage” crusades, and “comprehensive” sex education that paves the way for the painful emotional, physical, and psychological consequences of teenage sexual activity remain at the forefront of the public arena. Meanwhile, behind closed doors, our political process has long been tainted by corruption, pay-to-play schemes, and backroom deals.
Voting our values demands that we take a stand not only in the former, more obvious issues – and indeed, we must take a stand in them as they are paramount to the order and health of our society – but also in the latter, less obvious issues such as the integrity of our elected officials.
Recent months and years have witnessed numerous indictments against state legislators and other elected officials here in New Jersey. While these legal actions are important, we must never forget that it is “we the people” to whom elected officials are accountable. We should never assume we are held hostage to one official or another unless and until the law removes him or her. Through the voting process, we have the ability – and, indeed, the duty – to elect men and women of integrity to office and to remove those whose dishonorable actions automatically disqualify them from deserving the public trust.
So, with campaign season in full swing and Election Day just weeks away, take time to educate yourself on the men and women seeking your vote and your trust. Study their platforms, understand their plans, and learn their political persuasions. And then, when you enter the voting booth on November 4,
vote your values!
