Lieutenant Governor Pick Threatens Sanctity of Marriage, Life
Posted July 31, 2009

She's been called "progressive," "feisty," "far left", "a reformer," and "one of the Legislature's most liberal . members." Now, State Senator Loretta Weinberg can add another appellation to the list: candidate for Lieutenant Governor of the State of New Jersey.

Last Friday, news broke that Governor Jon Corzine had selected Weinberg to be his running mate, citing " her legislative experience, the significant and positive change she's brought to our state, and . her personal values and unquestionable integrity."

Unfortunately, much of the "change" Senator Weinberg wants to bring to our state is anything but positive.

Consider, for example, that Senator Weinberg

  • supports embryonic stem cell research and voted in favor of the $450 million ballot initiative to fund stem cell research in New Jersey (you'll recall voters rejected this plan);
  • opposed the ban on horrific partial-birth abortion, and
  • opposed legislation requiring a 24-hour waiting period before a woman has an abortion.

But that's not all.

Not only does Senator Weinberg support same-sex "marriage" but she is also a primary sponsor of legislation that would legalize same-sex "marriage" in New Jersey.

It's no wonder Governor Corzine's pick of Weinberg led Garden State Equality Chair Steven Goldstein to write the following:

Tens of thousands of Garden State Equality members are jumping for joy right now - our heads are spinning with jubilation - over Governor Corzine's selection of Senator Loretta Weinberg as his running mate for Lieutenant Governor. Loretta is our godmother and guardian angel.  Garden State Equality's highest award is even named for her:  The Loretta Weinberg Prize for Lifetime Achievement.

Loretta is the architect of every LGBT civil rights law enacted in New Jersey since she entered the legislature in 1993, including our state's domestic partnership and civil union laws, and our anti-discrimination, hate crimes and school bullying laws that encompass sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.

She is the prime sponsor of the marriage equality bill now before the state legislature.

Of course, far more than the LGBT community is ecstatic today.  Our unbridled happiness is shared by every other constituency whose lives Loretta has touched. She is prime sponsor of more than 50 laws and the co-prime sponsor of another 40 laws - simply astounding.

Governor Corzine didn't just name a public official to serve by his side today. He named a legend. It's a selection that says volumes about his exemplary leadership and his progressive vision of our state.

To progressive voters all across New Jersey, Governor Corzine's selection of Loretta Weinberg is like adding a jolt of a million volts. We are electrified.

As Mr. Goldstein alludes to, Senator Weinberg unquestionably has extensive legislative experience. Unfortunately, this experience coupled with her radical anti-marriage and anti-life views pose a grave threat to the protection of marriage and the unborn.

Now more than ever, we must be vigilant in championing the cause of marriage and in fighting aggressively against efforts to destroy this foundational support of a healthy society.
