Same-Sex Adoption Outcomes
In the 3/24/06 article Report Supports Adoption by Gays, reporter David Crary does not even question the statement made by Illinois State University adoption “expert” Jeanne Howard who says “virtually every valid study reaches the same conclusion: The children of gays and lesbians adjust positively…”. It is amazing how often one “expert’s” opinions are printed as fact, without seeking to verify their interpretation of research on such a critical issue. Howard must have missed the June 2001 review of all those studies conducted by Dr. Judith Stacey and Timothy Biblarz and printed in the American Sociological Review. These researchers re-evaluated 21 psychological studies conducted between 1981 and 1998, which purportedly found no differences in children raised by same-sex parents. Although Dr. Stacey was sympathetic to homosexual adoption in media interviews, their study results revealed instead that children of homosexual couples were more likely to be confused about their own sexual identity, more likely to engage in homosexual relationships, and more likely to be promiscuous. If the public were more aware of this critical information, public polling would certainly show less support for gay adoption.
