Biased Civil Union Commission at it Again! NJ Must Pass Marriage Amendment
(TRENTON) The Civil Union Review Commission (CURC) – stacked with pro-same-sex “marriage” advocates – has issued a new report replete with unsubstantiated claims designed to push the NJ Legislature to redefine marriage. It is obvious that these activists, with the help of Governor Corzine and assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts, are determined to shove same-sex “marriage” down the throats of the vast majority of New Jersey residents, (61%), who believe that same-sex couples have a right to live as they choose, yet do not have the right to change the definition of marriage for the rest of society. Instead of supporting the redefinition of marriage for all New Jerseyans and praising this biased report, they should be working to pass a ballot amendment to “Let the People Decide” in NJ on preserving marriage between one man and one woman.
The Civil Union Commission (CURC) report changes nothing with regard to the real issue – preserving the title and definition of marriage. When lawmakers passed a civil union law they rightly recognized the historic and societal need for marriage to remain as the union of one man and one woman only, and recognized that to redefine it would open the door to further redefinition. Their goal was to give the same benefits to same-sex couples and their families and that is what the new civil union law has done on the state level.
“The civil union law is working, said Len Deo, President of the NJFPC. Remarkably, there have only been 8 formal complaints filed with the Civil Rights Commission and the numbers regarding civil unions working speak for themselves.” “For the miniscule percent of eighteen-thousands of one percent 0.00018% we’re going to change the definition of marriage? That’s absurd.”
The numbers speak for themselves:
8,600,000 – The total number of residents living in New Jersey
1,600,000 – The total number of married couples living in New Jersey
3,200,000 – The number of married individuals in NJ
37.2 % – The percentage of married persons in NJ to the total population
245,100 – The estimated number of homosexual persons living in NJ
2.8 % – The percentage of homosexual persons in NJ to the total population
3,353 – The number of homosexual couples who formed Civil Unions in New Jersey; only 2.7% of homosexuals
0.04% – The percentage of homosexual couples who are Civil Unionized in NJ to the total population.
8 – The number of homosexual couples who have formed Civil Unions in New Jersey who have filed complaints with the NJ Civil Rights Commission claiming that Civil Unions are not working
0.00018% – The percentage of civil unioned individuals filing formal complaints to the total population
Most importantly, marriage must be preserved between one man and one woman only in NJ because it is vitally important to our children and grandchildren. It is priceless in the impact it has on how children grow up and learn to be equipped to form stable families of their own. “The CURC’s argument that redefining marriage would not cause any economic fallout is laughable, and the insinuation that children would somehow benefit from society equating same-sex unions to marriage is sadly false”, said Toni Meyer, Director of Research for the NJFPC. “Society should not be equating same-sex unions to marriage, because they are not equal in benefit to anyone.” In Scandinavia, where same-sex unions have been legal longest, government data shows that same-sex unions break up at a significantly higher rate, valid research shows that children raised in these households are more confused about their sexual identity, and more likely to be promiscuous, and LGB youth are more likely to experience teen pregnancy.
“There remains no real evidence to justify redefining marriage from its traditional understanding as being between one man and one woman,” said Len Deo. “Let the People decide and pass a marriage amendment once and for all.”
