Trenton, NJ - Today the New Jersey Family Policy Council hails the decision of the US Supreme Court upholding the 2003 ban on partial birth abortion. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the majority opinion and was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts, Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. “This is a great day for the babies and the pro-life movement. This ruling finally puts an end to a horrific procedure wherein the baby, in the late stages of pregnancy, is removed from the birth canal with the head remaining in the mother and the abortionist inserts a medical instrument into the back of the almost fully born baby’s base of the skull and suctions out the brain, thus delivering a dead baby. In a civilized society this is a barbaric procedure that now, finally is outlawed,” stated Len Deo, Founder and President of the New Jersey Family Policy Council. “For 34 years with no restrictions on abortion whatsoever, I believe we have seen a cheapening in the dignity of life in our state and in our country. This decision begins the dawn of a new day, where hopefully our society will struggle back towards a culture of life.” Deo added. “Today’s decision is a direct result of President Bush’s commitment to appoint judges who will not legislate from the bench, but who will properly interpret the law that is created by the legislative branch. In addition the will of the American people has been to put restrictions on abortion. Polling for bans on Partial Birth Abortion has consistently been in the 70 – 80 percent range. This is a step, albeit a small step but it is a monumental step in returning some sanity to our culture. People can disagree, but you have to be pretty radical to support such a barbaric procedure,” Deo continued. “As we look back to the founders of this great nation, we see a nation founded on the principle that all people are endowed by our Creator with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That does not mean unrestricted freedom in what we do as a culture and a society. It does mean that there is responsibility for the general welfare of the people and babies in the womb at such a late stage in their development should not be the victims of infanticide. I would submit that those babies have every much a right to life as each person who is fortunate enough to be living today. Today’s decision emphasizes why women and men of faith must be vigilant about causes of truth and righteousness. We can make a difference, we must make a difference! I thank God and the US Supreme Court for this most important decision,” concluded Deo.
