Illicit K-Rock Billboards Violate Community Standards
Advertisers Responding to Public Outcry!

WHIPPANY: The New Jersey Family Policy Council (NJFPC) launched an ongoing citizen campaign on May 9th to voice strong concerns about the illicit billboards that radio station 92 K-Rock has placed on prominent, commonly traveled roadways within the tri-sate area. As a result of the hundreds of calls and e-mails from concerned citizens to advertisers, three advertisers pulled their advertising from the station’s website. We are very grateful to those advertisers who showed great concern for keeping our communities clean from these soft porn billboards.

Many concerned citizens have contacted the Council about these illicit billboards, stating they are offensive and inappropriate for family viewing and asking what could be done to get them removed.  One call was from a mother who was very upset that her young son was unavoidably exposed to one of these billboards while they were traveling in the car together. Another was from a parent who was appalled that such an ad would be placed in their town within very close proximity to a middle school in plain daily view of the children. In response to the public outcry, we have issued on-going alerts to provide citizens contact information for the station and their advertisers: urging K-rock to discontinue the ads, and to request that advertisers discontinue advertising with K-Rock.

Parents and guardians have enough trouble trying to keep their children from unsolicited pornographic assaults on the internet.  The last thing parents want is for soft porn billboards to be plastered before their kids’ eyes in roadways we travel day in and day out.  Adolescents, teens, and even fathers need no further unsolicited enticements or encouragement to look for pornography or be enabled to place these soft porn images on their computers. 92K-Rock’s website also allows anyone – including adolescents & teens – to view the photo shoots of these women and to download and use the soft porn pictures as “wallpaper” onto their computer screens or to e-mail them amongst their friends.  This indecent ad campaign violates community standards, as well as the right of parents and guardians to protect innocent, young children from such images.

“We must hold this radio station accountable and inform their advertisers of the angst these billboards are causing to families and especially young children,” stated Len Deo, President of the NJ Family Policy Council.  “If we do not respond now, then perhaps, K-Rock may feel free to push the envelope even further next time.”
