After Alabama passed a new law restricting abortion, Trentonian newspaper columnist Jeff Edelstein wrote on May 21st, 2019,
New Jersey’s official motto is “Liberty and Prosperity.” We should modify it slightly. The new motto should be, “Liberty – which means ‘the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life, behavior, or political views,’ which, by literal definition, would include abortion – and Prosperity.”…
…By the way, I feel like I should mention something here: I think abortion is abhorrent. I really do. If I were ever asked to be part of a decision when it comes to abortion – namely, if I was the father of the unborn child – I would vote for having the baby. Keep it, adopt it, drop it off at the police station, I don’t care. Any decision that keeps this burgeoning life alive would be the clear decision. I mean, I take bugs outside instead of killing them when they’re in my living room, so how in the world could I tell a woman who is pregnant with my child she should abort it? The thought of abortion is – to me – a non-starter. So yes. I would never abort a child. Never.
Of course, I don’t currently own a uterus, so it’s easy for me to take the moral high ground, even if the moral high ground is the correct place to be.
Edelstein’s comments are encouraging and startling. It is encouraging that Americans, more than ever, recognize that abortion takes the life of an innocent baby in the womb. It is startling though that while many believe abortion is immoral they are not willing to end the killing. The time has come for the Church to stand up for morality, justice, and righteousness.
The NJ State Legislature is sitting on a bill that would protect babies in the womb at twenty weeks. LifeNet’s 20/20 Project is working to protect babies in the womb at 20 weeks and beyond by the year 2020. Would you join the 20/20 Project and churches across New Jersey in praying for the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, bill #A3452/S2026, to move forward in the legislative process? We encourage you to incorporate the following prayer needs within your existing prayer groups. If you do not have a dedicated prayer ministry, we invite you to start a monthly 20/20 Project prayer group in your local church to pray for:
- The Lord to move in the hearts and minds of NJ Assemblypersons and Senators to recognize the grave injustice of abortion.
- Pray specifically for Senate President Steve Sweeney, Speaker Craig Coughlin, Senator Joe Vitale, and Assemblyman Herb Conaway who have the power to move the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act forward in the legislative process.
- Pray for Gov. Phil Murphy to recognize the injustice of abortion.
Please let us know your church’s prayer involvement for the cause of Life in NJ. It would strengthen our coalition of pro-life groups to know we have widespread spiritual support behind us!
Finally, many churches from across NJ have participated in the 20/20 postcard campaign. Nearly 100,000 postcards have been sent to state legislators over the past year. Would you be willing to mobilize people in your church to participate? You can email Christine Flaherty – email@example.com to let her know if your church can commit to prayer and/or would like more information about the postcard campaign.
Thank you for your service in ministry. You are impacting more lives than you know.
