Legislative Happenings: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!

Friends,

On Monday, March 25, 2019 two crucial votes were scheduled for a floor vote in both the NJ Assembly and the NJ Senate.

I was on hand to talk last-minute to legislators who were still undecided and to continue to persuade them to vote no on both bills.

The two bills were Physician Assisted Suicide and Recreational Marijuana. These were both very controversial and hotly contested…

The Good News First

Recreational marijuana did not have the votes to pass in the NJ Senate. Seeing possible defeat, Senate President Steve Sweeney pulled the bill so there was not a vote in the Senate. Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin also pulled the Assembly version, deferring the vote to another day. There is great debate in both chambers about recreational marijuana. It is not a slam dunk and we will continue to fight against legalization! If you are interested in partnering with us, contact me!

The Bad News Next

The Physician-Assisted Suicide Bill was not as fortunate. This bill passed in both chambers barely getting the number needed to squeak by for passage; Minority Leader Jon Bramnick held his Assembly caucus tight and not one Republican voted YES for the bill. In addition, there were thirteen Democrats who either voted NO or Abstained.

The Ugly News Last

In the NJ Senate, the Democratic caucus consists of 26 members. However, they could only get 18 Democrats to vote YES on Physician Assisted Suicide. What??? You are probably questioning!! I thought they needed 21 votes for passage? Yes, they did. So where did the final three votes come from?

From three Republican Senators: Kip Bateman, Declan O’Scanlon, and Sam Thompson. If the Republican caucus had held tight, perhaps we would be reporting on a victory defeating this egregious legislation. Although we are grateful the remaining eleven Republican Senators voted NO along with eight Democrats, we fell short of victory.

I am truly grateful for all of those on both sides of the aisle who did not support this legislation. After six years of battling to defeat this bill I can only think about what Jesus said on the cross, “Father forgive them, they know not what they do!”

We Need Your Help!

As you now know, the assisted-suicide bill is on the Governor’s desk as he determines whether or not to sign it. We have heard that he is weighing the public sentiment on assisted-suicide before he makes his decision.

We need your help – please send a message to Governor Murphy asking him to veto the assisted-suicide bill – it only takes a few seconds to send your message in our Action Center.
We will not give up, we will stand strong, no matter what the outcome, we will stand on the side of Truth.

Yours for the Family,
Len
