A5508 was passed out of committee on partisan lines last Thursday (June 13, 2019). There was much discussion about removing the exemption for religious employers (which includes Christian and Catholic churches, hospitals, educational institutions, etc.)
Unfortunately, the bill passed keeping intact language that would expand insurance coverage for abortion inducing drugs and eliminate the religious employers’ exemption currently contained in New Jersey law.
S3804/A5508 is part of a package of bills that the Governor and the legislature are supporting to create a New Jersey version of the federal Affordable Care and Patient Protection Act of 2010 commonly known as Obama Care! That law required the Little Sisters of the Poor and Hobby Lobby to fight for their religious liberty all the way to the US Supreme Court to avoid being mandated to pay for abortion inducing drugs. We must now speak up for our freedom of conscience.
A5508 is on a fast track and is now scheduled for a full vote in the Assembly Chamber on Thursday, June 20, 2019 at 1:00 pm.
If the existing religious employers’ exemption is eliminated, all faith-based institutions including Christian/Catholic Schools, Churches and faith-based non-profits would be forced to provide insurance coverage for abortion inducing drugs.
Please contact your legislators and ask them to support a floor amendment that would keep intact the religious exemptions now contained in New Jersey Law. It will only take a few seconds to send your message in our Action Center.
The bill as proposed now would remove New Jersey’s current religious employers’ exemptions.
